Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are set to meet for their first debate on Tuesday night, showcasing starkly different visions for the country.

False Claims on Abortion:

Trump: Claims that some states allow abortions after birth, which is false. Infanticide is criminalised in all states. Harris: Suggested Trump would enact a nationwide abortion ban, though Trump has denied this and stated abortion policy should be managed by states.

Afghanistan Withdrawal:

Trump: Blames Harris for the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. However, Trump’s 2020 deal with the Taliban is cited as a key factor in the collapse of Afghan security forces. Harris: Was reportedly the last person in the room during Biden’s decision to proceed with Trump’s withdrawal plan, but her role in decision-making remains limited.

Economic Claims:

Trump: Claims that his presidency saw the best economic performance, despite the COVID-19 pandemic-induced recession and inflation peaks. Harris: Proposes policies like $25,000 down payment assistance, but experts warn it might exacerbate housing shortages.

Oil and Energy:

Trump: Promises to increase oil production, but oil output is at an all-time high under Biden, with gas prices significantly reduced. Harris: Accused of shifting views on fracking; previously opposed but now supports current practices.

Crime Rates:

Trump: Criticises Biden’s handling of crime, despite FBI data showing a decrease in violent crime post-pandemic. – According to DoJ, there was a 42.4% increase in violent crime from 2021 to 2022.

Border Security:

Trump: Claims 20 million illegal crossings under the current administration, which is unsubstantiated. The actual figure includes 7.1 million arrests and 8.7 million encounters, but not all are unique individuals. – No evidence, however, supports a link between illegal immigration and a spike in violent crime.
