Uttarakhand passes Uniform Civil Code: 7 key points to know about the bill

The Uttarakhand Assembly on February 7 passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill. The bill was passed by voice vote.

Once the bill gets the governor's consent, Uttarakhand will become the first state after independence to get a common law on marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance for all citizens, irrespective of their religion. Here are some key highlights of the bill.

The UCC Bill requires the registration of live-in relationships, and failure to do so may result in imprisonment up to three months and/or a fine of up to Rs 10,000.

The bill imposes a complete ban on child marriage. As per the bill, the age for marriage will be 18 for women and 21 for men in all communities.

The bill also makes marriage registration mandatory in all religions.

The Bill prohibits polygamy by stating that neither party should have a living spouse at the time of marriage.

The bill introduces uniform divorce process for both men and women. But a couple must wait for at least one year after marriage before seeking divorce in court, except in exceptional cases.

The bill criminalises practices like halala, iddat, and triple talaq.
