Vir Das Wins International Emmy: His Meteoric Rise to Fame

Indian comedian, actor and musician, Vir Das, won the 2023 International Emmy Award in comedy category.

The stand-up comic won the award for his popular Netflix originals Vir Das: Landing. He shared the award with Derry Girls Season 3.

The news of his win was shared by the official International Emmy Awards handle on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Speaking about his win, Vir said, “This moment is truly surreal – an incredible honour that feels like a dream." He called it a "milestone" for "Indian comedy as a whole".

He posted a pic of him holding the award on Instagram, and wrote "For India For Indian Comedy. Every breath, every word."

Vir Das began his career with a gig at a premier hotel in New Delhi, with a performance titled Walking on Broken Das. He kept on performing, and quickly rose to fame since.

He ventured into the YouTube space in 2013, attracting both national and international audiences, with his comedy and satirical videos.

His stand-up comedy achieved global recognition with performances in Netflix specials like Outside In, For India, Losing It, and Abroad Understanding.

He stepped into Bollywood in 2007, and made his mark through numerous movies such as Badmaash Company (2010), Delhi Belly (2011) and Go Goa Gone (2013).

Besides his humour, he often made to the headlines due to his controversial statements. His I come from two Indias monologue, delivered at the John F Kennedy Centre, Washington DC had wrecked havoc in India.

In the 6-minute video, Das talked about the duality of the country and mentioned some of the most topical issues India was facing in 2021, battling against COVID-19, gang-rapes, crackdown against comedians to the farmers.

However, instances like these could not stop the 42-year-old from speaking his heart out and garnering love and fame all over the world.
