Who is Revanth Reddy, the Congress leader poised to be Telangana’s next CM?
The Congress has gone from winning 19 seats in 2018 to securing 64 seats, all thanks to party chief Anumula Revanth Reddy.
Revanth Reddy has defeated Chief Minister and BRS boss K Chandrashekar Rao in his stronghold Kamareddy.
Revanth started off with the ABVP. He joined the TDP and was elected to the Kodangal constituency in 2009 and 2014.
He left the TDP after the party’s involvement in a bribing scandal had come to light, only to join Congress in 2017.
Reddy is said to have galvanised support from within the Congress to bring all warring factions together and suppress rebellion among senior Congressmen who had begun to defect to the BJP this election.
Reddy launched a padayatra in February this year, which gained massive public support and proved to be a turning point in accelerating 2023 Assembly elections.
Many members of the Congress believe that Reddy benefited from the his caste as well.
Reddy is well known to take on KCR directly and attack his family, something that no Congress leader earlier had dared to do.
If Reddy is named chief minister, he will join a long line of Reddys who have won Telugu state (previously united Andhra Pradesh) for the Congress party.
