World Skyscraper Day, celebrated every year on September 3, is a tribute to the breathtaking structures that have transformed the cities. These structures are testaments to human creativity, engineering prowess and an unwavering drive to reach for the skies.
In the early 20th century, a 10-20-story building would be considered a skyscraper.
The Home Insurance Building in Chicago, built in 1885, was the world’s first ever skyscraper which stood at only 138 meters.
Today, China stands as the only country to have more than 3,000 skyscrapers, with around 120 buildings with a height of more than 300 meters.
The US stands second on this list, with a total of approximately 900 skyscrapers. Out of which 31 are more than 300 meters.
India comes on number 12 with 122 skyscrapers.
The LIC Building in Chennai, completed in 1959, marked the beginning of the skyscraper era in India.
Currently, the Palais Royale in Mumbai, with a height of 320 meters is the tallest under-construction skyscraper in India.
Burj Khalifa currently holds the title of the world’s tallest building, with a height of 830 meters.
The upcoming Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia will clinch the title of the world’s tallest building upon its completion. It is said to be 1 kilometre tall (3,281 feet).
